How the subsidy actually works

01.    It's capacity-based, not bill-based

₹30,000 per kW for your first 2kW, then ₹18,000 for the 3rd kW. Anything installed beyond 3kW gets zero additional central subsidy — so oversizing past 3kW doesn’t buy you more support money.

02.    ₹78,000 is the ceiling, not a guarantee

A 10kW system gets the same ₹78,000 as a 3kW system. If your bill supports a larger system, the extra capacity is still worth it for savings — just don’t expect the subsidy to scale with it.

03.    Some states add their own top-up

A handful of states layer a state-level incentive on top of the central amount. These change year to year, so treat our estimate as a starting point and confirm the current figure with your state nodal agency.

04.    Vendor choice can make or break your claim

Subsidy claims are commonly rejected over non-ALMM-listed inverters or panels. Installing through an MNRE-empanelled vendor isn’t optional paperwork — it’s the difference between getting paid and not.

The state top-up is what changes.

Every state gets the same MNRE central subsidy. A handful of states layer their own scheme on top — this is where the real difference in your final payout comes from.

Eligibility

Do you actually qualify for
the central subsidy?

These are the conditions the national portal checks before it approves your application. Miss one, and your claim stalls regardless of your bill or system size.

Residential electricity connection

The connection must be residential (LMV-1 category or your state’s equivalent). Commercial, industrial, and institutional connections are not eligible for the central CFA.

Ownership or written consent

You need clear rights to install on the rooftop — as the owner, or with written permission from the property owner if you’re a tenant.

Grid-connected with a valid consumer number

Your home must already have a DISCOM electricity connection and consumer number — the scheme is built around grid-tied net metering, not off-grid systems.

No prior subsidy on the same connection

If a rooftop solar subsidy has already been claimed against this exact electricity connection, it can’t be claimed again.

Shadow-free, structurally sound roof

Roughly 80–100 sq. ft. of unobstructed roof per kW is needed. Significant shading from trees or neighbouring structures can affect both feasibility approval and generation.

DCR / ALMM-listed panels, empanelled vendor

Installation must go through an MNRE-empanelled vendor using ALMM-approved modules and inverters — this is the single most common reason claims get rejected.
